Wittenberg Mountain Trail Guide

Located in Ulster County in New York State is Wittenberg Mountain.  This mountain summit is accessible via a number of rustic trail heads and trail systems. Encompassed within the Slide Mountain Wilderness it is an accessible day hike from various large cities including New York City.  A very popular hike it is common to find numerous hikers enjoying the unobstructed views of the summit.  Within clear view of Wittenberg to the east is the Ashokan Reservoir which is a key water supply for New York City. The trailhead for Wittenberg Mountain is located at the Woodland Valley Campground. (Note: To park at Woodland Valley Campground there is a fee, check DEC website for info)

  • A very rustic trail, especially the last third of it. A real immersion in nature.
  • A steep and challenging climb through a thick mountain forest.
  • At 3,780ft in elevation, the view from the summit is one of the best in all of the Catskills.
  • At the base is the popular Woodland Valley Campground on the banks of the Woodland Creek.
  • A very challenging day hike. A real feeling of accomplishment after completing this hike.
