It can not be stressed enough to plan accordingly for venturing out into the wilderness whether it is for a multi-day backpacking trip or even for the simplest of day hikes. An innocent stray off course and an easy overlook of essential gear can result in disaster with life threatening consequences in an instant, even for the most avid backcountry trekker.
- Extra clothes for day and night temps:
Temps can vary drastically in remote wildernesses and at high elevations. Packing warm clothes for night temps even on day hikes is essential in case of unexpected detours.
- First aid:
Scrapes, blisters, twisted ankles all can easily happen on treks. Being unprepared for such an event can lead to serious health problems and doctors visits if not properly equipped.
- Bushcraft knife:
A proper bushcraft knife can be a life saver. Whether it's for cutting twigs, shavings kindling, cutting rope, there are many tasks a proper knife can be essential for. If you don't have one, you may wish you did.
- Fire starters:
Cooking and warmth, fire is key to survival. Water proof matches and lighter both recommended.
- Shelter system:
Tent, sleeping bag, emergency blanket. Stuck out in the elements over night with no shelther will be life threatening.
- Headlamp/lights:
Night in the forest without lights is like walking around with your eyes closed. Packing extra batteries is a good idea too.
- Maps and directions:
Paper maps, compass, GPS devices, personal locator beacons.
- Water and filtration/purification:
Packing enough water is key. Risk of death starts within 3 days or even less in the backcountry without water.
- Food:
Take enough food to last for a few days longer than your hike is planned for. Always expect the unexpected.
- Bug spray and sun lotion:
Bug spray is always a must and depending on the location of the trek sun lotion as well.
