The Pemigewasset Loop

The Pemigewasset Loop is one of the most popular backpacking routes in all of the northeast. The typical starting and finishing point of this over 30 mile loop is the Lincoln Woods trailhead parking lot. There are numerous backcountry tent sites along the route operated by the AMC and require small nightly fees. Water Sources are also available along the route. Backpackers will cross over 10 peaks over 4,000ft and 2 over 5,000ft with options for side treks to add other 4,000 footers. An incredibly beautiful, pristine, and well managed wilderness area that will be an amazing adventure for hikers of all skill levels.

Key Features
  • Mount Lafayette at 5,249ft is the tallest peak on the loop.  Mount Lincoln is over 5K as well at 5,089ft.  8 other peaks are over 4,000ft with the option to add other nearby peaks.
  • Multiple backcountry tent sites with caretaker, bear box, outhouse, tent platforms(limited overflow):  Liberty Springs(7 small platforms/3 large), Garfield Ridge(1 Lean-to/2 small platforms/5 large), Guyot(1 Lean-to/4 small platforms/2 large).
  • Water sources:  Each of the listed tent sites have nearby natural springs that require filtration.  Alternatively, significant mile long detours can be taken to various AMC huts to refill at their water stations.
  • The Franconia Ridge:  Easily the busiest section of the Pemi Loop, the Franconia Ridge has approx. 2.5 miles of alpine zone and is also a section of the Appalachian Trail.
  • Beautiful flora and fauna, add an extra half of a pound to base weight for binoculars not just for wildlife, but for the views.
